What is Suzuki Method?

Suzuki method was created by Dr. Shinichi Suzuki from Japan who believed every child, if properly taught, is capable of a high level of musical achievement. He believed musical talents can be developed in a nurturing environment and through structured instructions. The method is based on the principle that a child learns to speak before he/she learns to read a language. Taking the same approach to music learning, a student is encouraged to learn songs and play the instrument before learning to read musical notes.

Suzuki method vs. Traditional methods

The main difference in Suzuki approach is that students learn music by listening and imitating as opposed to reading music in traditional methods. Suzuki method is great for younger beginners who do not yet know how to read. Students as young as 3 or 4 years old can start learning an instrument with Suzuki method. Traditional methods emphasize on music reading, thus require the student to be at least 6 years old to start music lessons.

Parent involvement is also essential in Suzuki method. As the student learns music by listening and imitating, the parent acts as a home teacher who facilitates listening and practice routines. In contrast, students who learn through traditional methods are more independent in learning as they learn to read and understand musical elements analytically, not by imitating the teacher or parent.
